How to do Standing Side Bend

StandingHoldBoth sidesBeginner

Standing Side Bend is a standing stretch for your abdomen, lats and lower back. Do it on one side, then switch.

Step by step

  1. 1Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2Pop your left hand on your hip.
  3. 3Then breathe in, reach your right arm up overhead, and lean over to your left.

What you should feel

Feel the whole right side of your body open.

Form tips

  • Lift up first, then bend over. Keep the hips level and still. Feel the stretch along the right side, lats to waist.
  • Breathe into your right ribs.
  • Let your neck soften… no need to look up.

Make it easier

If your shoulder is tight, keep your right hand on your head instead.

Coming out of it

On your next exhale… come back to center… and float your arm down.

Muscles it works

Move slowly and stop if anything hurts. This is general guidance, not medical advice; check with a professional if you're injured or recovering.
